The Phoenix Elementary School District #1 is Arizona’s first and oldest free public school district established in 1871. Phoenix #1 has lasted 150 years including two pandemics, world wars, challenges to the whole concept of a free appropriate public education for every child, economic depressions, inflations, segregation, corporal punishment, rapid growth, overcrowded schools, annexations, inadequate funding, fires, declining enrollment, and gentrification. More importantly, we survived because our children and communities deserved a high-quality, rigorous education where every student achieves academic success.

Phoenix #1 is committed to nurturing young minds and leading students on a journey that prepares them for college, career, and life. The district is proud to have 150 years of resiliency under our belt, and we are excited to embark on the next 150 years of educating Phoenix’s youth.

We invite you to celebrate our sesquicentennial as we continue to inspire every student to achieve academic success. Help us commemorate this historic event by sharing your stories, memories, photos, or simply taking a trip down memory lane. Join us on our journey of honoring our past, celebrating the present, and charting our course for the next 150 years!
