What makes Herrera Special?
Herrera is a special place because we are a family… “Familia Herrera.” I heard that when I came here and in the last 6 years I have really seen it in action. It is a place where we don’t give up on each other, where we have fun and make memories, and a place where we believe in every student and their potential.

What brought you to teaching children:
I love working with children because at this stage of their lives they are so authentic and teachable. If we provide the right supports and help find what motivates them they can really go after their passions. They teach me things, too, and keep me grounded!
Favorite book, as an adult, and why:
Wild by Cheryl Strayed. This book was so impactful for me because this author detailed her journey to heal from the death of her mother and some other hard things she went through by using adventure to do it. She backpacked over 1,000 miles by herself along the Pacific Crest Trail. I was inspired by her dedication to work on herself emotionally and not let fear get in the way.
Creative curriculum (something you do to personalize curriculum, annual project…):
In my work as a social worker at Herrera I utilize lots of methods to reach kids.. whether it be with arts and crafts, toys, role-play, talking, sports, games, etc., I look for what is both fun and evidence-based. I think change most frequently happens by experiences, not just conversations. Stop by my office sometime and see what I do!
